Duisenberg sees a much more restrictive role for the ECB than Greenspan does for the Fed:

The ECB now believes that overall eurozone growth will be 2-2.5% this year, sharply down from last year's 3.4%. But Mr Duisenberg insisted that his job was to monitor inflation, not boost growth.

"There's nothing that monetary policy can do about this," he said. "The most that we can do is create a stable atmosphere."
