LOS ANGELES, June 26 (Reuters) - California's first major new power plant in 13 years will be switched on Wednesday, a big step in the state's urgent efforts to tackle its chronic energy shortage.

Steve Larson, executive director of the California Energy Commission said that two more new plants would be brought on line by the end of next week, adding a total of almost 1,400 MW to the state's supply portfolio.
