Dear Paul:

You did not do any performance tests? If the Sony is much slower (at lower clock), it could be much cooler. I tried the HP 1G A4. It did not feel warmer from the keyboard side. Does the Sony have a fan? Passive cooling systems are always hotter than active ones. Besides, if the A4 can handle the high temps, its really not a problem. Did you check if the power mode was in automatic and what were the settings, if it was? Automatic mode is the best performance/power setting. If the notebook is idle, it puts it into a sleeplike mode. Every increment in required computation, speeds the CPU and thus raises power consumption until it is at full speed and power mode. This thus only uses the amount of power that the task requires. By testing and experience, it is better to run at just high enough clock to do the task than running at full speed and dropping into idle mode when task requirements are done at certain points (ie PWM uses more power than lower stable clock) since, voltage can be reduced in the first case but not the second.

Pete
