Re: I doubt it will pose a threat to sales of Itanium-based servers.

But there is a reason that Intel is buying the remains of DEC, and not DEC buying the remains of Intel.

There are fewer and fewer jobs that can't be done by one or two processor standard high volume servers.

Anyone remember the number of licenses for NT on Alpha that were sold during the year they stopped development? My recollection is that it was a tragically small number, fewer than 100.

What is today considered to be one of the less powerful servers in any particular company's line, would have been world class only a few years ago - and the challenges facing these systems haven't changed very much.

IBM makes big money selling software and support for these large systems, they don't make much money on the systems themselves. If Intel can start selling software and services for these machines, they might make a lot of money with them. There were some very good service and support people at Compaq, maybe the new operation will be a winner.
