Benjamin,

re: Nokia Watch ...

<< NOK promised volume shipments (millions) of GPRS handsets by Q3... beginning June...tens of millions by Q4... beginning September... for the holiday season. >>

I could of course be wrong, but I do not believe that is what Nokia said or promised.

What Nokia said (what Jorma Ollila said - and I heard) on 1/30/01 on Nokia GPRS Handset Deliveries was:

"As I said earlier in the press conference we told our timetable to the market place for the GPRS handsets about 15 months ago and we have not slipped on that timetable, so we are performing as we indicated early on and with roll out of volume shipments in the 3rd quarter and with millions following in the 4th quarter"

There was no mention of June, there was no mention of TENS of millions ... Jorma said millions:

nokia.com

Now in case I heard that incorrectly, you can listen to what Jorma actually did say here, in response to the question "have you gained experience in GPRS development that you can utilize in 3G business development?"

Now in all fairness, and in contradiction to what Jorma said (in my paraphrase above), in the Q3 Nokia CC there was no mention of GPRS schedules. However, in the Q&A Jorma was asked about that. His answer was very brief - less than 20 seconds - and he stated second half 2001.

Herschel Shosteck in the CDG sponsored whitepaper translated this into a nine month delay. I translate it to a 3 month delay.

Nokia formally released there GPRS handsets for GSM-900/1800 at CeBIT, in Hannover, end of March, 2001.

<< GSM-1900 operators are not expecting volume delivery of GPRS-only handsets until mid 2002 >>

As I am sure you know, Nokia has NOT committed yet to GPRS handsets for GSM-1900. I commented here on that on April 4 (CTIA - Conspicuous by their absence).

Players on the hook for GSM-1900 handsets for the United States are perpetually late for everything they promise Samsung, as well as Siemens, Motorola, and Ericsson.

If you can find any reference to any one of the 5 members of Nokia's senior management team making a commitment to June (other than my reference above), to TENS of millions rather than millions, or to GSM-1900 in 2001, I would be most appreciative of you or any other citizen of this thread, advising me of same.

<< "..Nokia (NOK) 22.10 -1.49: Hearing that a major brokerage firm commented on NOK this afternoon, stating that the company is not even displaying its new GPRS handsets and will not deliver its first units in Q3 as a result; firm reportedly sees this as a negative for NOK and the industry as some operators might delay GPRS launches to wait for NOK phones.- briefing.com - June 14 "

Do you know if the "major brokerage firm" firm commenting on NOK was ever identified?

Thank you,

- Eric -
