THE NET IS BAD FOR BUSINESS EN MASSE! horrible. dastardly! evil!

of course, certain niche markets can flourish, but business in general will get creamed

SB,

We differ slightly on this. It is my opinion that the efficient and best marketers will do fine. The net will read out the weak player and cause a consolidation of the stronger efficient players. The consumer will still get lower prices and the retailers will have thinner margins. However, the retailers will have larger revenue stream and reduced expenses.

The firms starting to benefit here in the retail sector are Penneys, Bertlemanns, Insurance firms, banking and a variety of other service firms. In particular, the cost of travel has dropped for the consumer. The travel suppliers have eliminated the travel agent and their expenses and are ending up with more efficient flights (referring to airlines here)and no loss of profit from the net. The loss of profit currently is due to higher fuel bills but that would have occurred with or without the net.
