John --

Great article.

Oh to be a peer! Perhaps the new peerage will hinge on fiber backbones. Who knows. . .

Seems like a lot of power is concentrated at the top and that the debates have just begun.

One thought: is it possible for the combined strength of the top ISPs to put pressure on the RBOCs to unbundle their loops more freely? I'm not sure how they're connected, politically speaking, but if MCI and Sprint and UUNet and ANS (now owned by AOL) and BBN (now owned by GTE) are all owners, it seems to me they could leverage that power to their advantage.

I need help on this one. :)

Cheers!

Pat
