It says so right on AMD's roadmap. Clawhammer for single and dual processor systems, and Sledgehammer for 4-way and above.

First of all, you don't have to worry about the near term, since AMD's own roadmap doesn't show Sledgehammer arriving until late 2002. And even that is overly optimistic, not to mention the very survival of Sledgehammer itself.
Second, I don't see significant near-term demand for even 2-way systems coming from AMD, except for small screwdriver shops and enthusiasts looking for a "dualie delight" (tm. Omid Rahmat of THG) they can build themselves. Like you said, the tough economy this year will discourage most OEMs from even trying AMD.
Third, next year Intel will release Prestonia and Plumas which will definitely shut the door on Athlon MP's long-term chances.
