There is no question in my mind they have been throwing darts for years and hope one hits the target. The other firms playing the same game could not raise as much cash so their experiment has ended.

More importantly, if they were "in track towards profitability" as the unrelentingly optimistic Bezos likes to claim, would AMZN be fudging with their prices?

I think not. IMHO this latest move is evidence that Amazon doesn't like its outlook in regard to profit margins.

OTOH raising prices is not a bad move altogether. The value proposition of Amazon should never have been "we got the cheapest books around", but "we have the largest catalogue on earth with user and editorial reviews and our prices are competitive". In fact I predicted about four months ago back that they would raise their prices.
