Optical Access has said they were working on OC-48 (2.5 Gbps) capability and also 16 channel DWDM for the last half of 2001. That is an effective 40Gbps OC-768 capability. That will open up high speed carrier applications, and should dramatically increase the demand for FSO.

Stick a 40Gbps link on a centrally located tall building, or between widely spread out tall buildings, then spread that bandwidth to the rest of the urban area using slower FSO links, and to suburbs using microwave technology. Sprint Broadband uses microwave technology to provide individual customers with faster access than DSL or Cable. I watched yesterday as a PC tech using Sprint BB downloaded several files onto my computer with speeds consistently between 400K-600K.

The microwave transmitter is located on the Sears Tower in Chicago and reaches up to 30 miles. You need line of sight. I am within that area, and you can probably see the tower from my roof. $40 per month - less than my current ATT @home cable service. My cable modem was out several hours again last night. I WANT IT!
