Hi Jdassoc; Re those registered DIMMs...

Those DDR guys have it completely wrong, regarding registered vs unbuffered. They think that the registered parts are going to be used in the big servers, while the unbuffered parts are going into regular desktops. Little do they know that there isn't a market for the unbuffered parts! Yeah, they're a bunch of idiots, but Jdassoc knows what the truth is, the only product with any volume is going to be the registered. Let's see just how bad off the memory makers are going to be when they discover that the unbuffered parts aren't going to have any volume...

Micron has seven registered DDR DIMMs and eight unbuffered DDR DIMMs. What a waste, they could have just designed the registered parts and ignored the infinitesimal market (i.e. mainstream desktop) for the unbuffered:
images.micron.com

Micron sells DDR DIMMs through Crucial, and they have 10 unbuffered and only 3 registered parts. I should note that totals don't match the above since some parts aren't sold yet, and some data sheets correspond to more than one part:

Think of all that design effort that Micron wasted! Just goes to show you, those memory makers don't know cr@p about the industry. Certainly they're not bothering to listen to what their customers are asking for! I wonder if there's a secret Rambus fantasy reason for why Micron would be trying to sell unbuffered DDR DIMMs to a public that clearly doesn't want it... Anyway, on to Hyundai, who's not much better. They've got 24 unbuffered DDR DIMM / SODIMM parts, and only 10 registered ones:

hynix.com SDRAM&SUB_RAM=Unbuffered DIMM 256Mb based
hynix.com SDRAM&SUB_RAM=Registered DIMM 128Mb based

hynix.com SDRAM&SUB_RAM=SO DIMM 128Mb based
hynix.com SDRAM&SUB_RAM=SO DIMM 256Mb based

Yeah, Hynudai doesn't know what their customers want, they concentrated 2x as much effort on the unbuffered modules as they did on the registered ones! Those companies that sued Rambus are run by idiots! And Infineon is only a little better, though they certainly know how to hire lawyers, they have 4 unbuffered DDR DIMM designs and 5 registered designs:

infineon.com

Samsung has 28 unbuffered DDR DIMM / SODIMM / Micro DIMM designs, and only 10 registered DDR DIMMs. I guess that means that Samsung is trying to fool TeamDDR into the quagmire of supporting unbuffered DIMMs. Yeah Rambus! Fool the opposition with contrary tactics, just like Sun Tzu!!!

Elpida, since they're a combination of the smarts of two memory makers, Hitachi and NEC, should know better, but they have 7 unbuffered DDR DIMMs / SODIMMs and 6 registered DDR DIMMs:

I guess Elpida will have the surprise of their life! Toshiba has 8 unbuffered DDR DIMMs, and only 5 registered DDR DIMMs, but I'm a known idiot, maybe I miscounted!!! But if I didn't, I guess Toshiba wasted a lot of time working on unbuffered DDR modules:

toshiba.com

Nanya is making three kinds of unbuffered DDR DIMMs, and no registered parts at all! I guess the idiots running that company don't have the foresight of Jdassoc!!!

nanya.com

Mitsubishi, now there's a winner! They only have one unbuffered DDR SODIMM module, but I guess they only have one registered DDR DIMM also:

mitsubishichips.com

The only company with any smarts is IBM, after all, they were the one that was mostly responsible for developing the registered DDR DIMM! But... (:<) Drat! They have 4 unbuffered DDR DIMMs as well as 4 registered DDR DIMMs! I guess IBM isn't too smart, they wasted half their design efforts on a product that doesn't have a use!

But at least IBM isn't in as much of a world of hurt as Mosel-Vitelic! All they have are unbuffered DDR DIMMs, 3 of them! I guess they'll have to conver their lines to making wallets!

Now that we've gone through the major memory makers, lets take a look at the demand side of the market, the companies that are making chipsets for DDR...
