Hi Jdassoc; About those chipset makers and registered DDR DIMMs...

The big one is VIA. What's this??? They have validations for 36 unbuffered DDR DIMM modules and only 14 registered DDR DIMMs? How can that be? Do you suppose that most of the use of VIA's DDR chipsets is with unbuffered memory???

via.com.tw

Yeah, DDR is doomed! The unbuffered DIMMs aren't going to be used for anything significant, but AMD only has unbuffered DDR DIMMs on their DDR validation page!

amd.com

I guess that means AMD has been spending all their time validating parts that aren't going to be used! Better buy some more RMBS leap calls, THIS MEANS DDR IS DOOMED!!! And those leaps are a bargain with the current RMBS price... Heck, Hager was buying the January 2002 62 1/2 calls, and we know how brilliant he is!!! He's got his own website!!!

Next is ALi. But if we look at their "validated DDR DIMM list", they list 9 parts. Four are from Nanya and therefore have to be unbuffered. There are 3 from Micron, and we go to look up their part numbers and ... whoa!!! They don't exist, LOL!!! Man, I can't imagine how that happened!!! LOL!!! Oh, I get it, they listed DDR components as well as the modules, and I was looking for the module number. Now I found them. They're all unbuffered. The remaining two modules are from Samsung, and they're also unbuffered!!! I guess ALi doesn't know cr@p about what memory their chipsets work with!!!

The best DDR performance so far is from the new kid on the block, SiS. They have two DDR chipsets about to come out, or just now available, one for Intel the other for AMD. That's funny. Both chipsets support unbuffered DDR DIMMs, but don't seem to have any support for registered DDR DIMMs!!! How could that be! You wonder what kind of idiots are running SiS! Don't they know that Jdassoc has declared that the most important part of the DDR market is going to be the registered portion???

The Athlon chipset from SiS is the same, "unbuffered" only!!!

Integrated DDR SDRAM Controller
Up to 3 DIMMs of Unbuffered DDR2100, DDR1600

I'm telling you, these companies need you! You'd better start putting out some letters straightening these guys out! They could end up implementing all kinds of unbuffered DDR solutions if you don't! I'm sure they're going to listen to you, you have all the technical background for this sort of work!

Better get that "save TeamDDR" letter writing campaign started, cause if you don't you're going to let an entire industry go right down the tubes!

But in the meantime, if you don't like my chart of unbuffered DDR DIMM prices, why don't you make your own for the (unavailable and little supported) registered parts?

P.S. Buy some more Rambus.
