Mike, having been involved with the edge of the advance of computing technology for many years, I believe the msft was a monopoly and was a net drag on technology advancement from post windows thru NT. I do believe that everything msft was found guilty of they did many times.

I also believe that the break up of the company may not have been warranted and msft may indeed be in decline and does not have it's former monopoly power. One because outside the US msft is American and is resented and also the pig software they create has genuine competition is today's application solution space that is much greater than isolated PC's running an office suite.

Also the internet and the fractured nature of the current PC market make difficult the control once possessed by msft.

Also the linux OS and IBM which just reported the ISV's are not porting to linux in droves is also destroying any monopoly dominance of msft in server space.

So the suit by the government served a positive purpose and to me is one of few right things that occured in the time of mr. bill.

In my opinion msft has very to do with America's technological dominance past, present and future. It did create with a solution at the time an incentive to invest in more technology and reduce cost. But the advances occurred to make really bad piggy software usable. But all really advanced research and development of cutting edge software does not run on a msft OS.

They once ran a navy cruiser on nt and It had to be towed back into port.
