Thought's about AFFX.
I have been watching AFFX for a while but have not invested yet. I think that the Motley Fool analysis with their infamous Short Sale of AFFX has some value.
The main argument of the analysis is that the market for AFFX biochips is limited. In a static environment, this may well be true. What AFFX needs is a roadmap to get the cost per unit if gene/biological information down by orders of magnitude. If they have a plausible roadmap to do so, they will be able to expand their potential markets by many orders of magnitude. Obviously, AFFX would be a terrific investment then. If they fail to do so, either somebody else will do it, or the biochip buiz will be a small niche market.
Right now, I do not know enough to make a case, so I would appreciate any insight in AFFX business strategy.
