The flaw with your logic here is that you're matching up products that you think compete in the marketplace. In reality, I don't think Athlon competes head-on against Pentium 4, even though AMD would like it to. The pricing indicates Athlon competes more directly in the marketplace against Pentium III and the higher speed Celeron products. Consumers ultimately determine the perceived value (and thus price) of products. It's the job of AMD's marketing folks to increase the perceived value of Athlon so that they can charge higher prices, but it doesn't currently seem to be working.
