What was listed was the price the most expensive desktop chip in each line sells for, the next most expensive, etc. The two lines were compared. And to a large degree, those are the competing chips for many buyers.
Although it doesn't matter what competes with what, those are the dollars seen by each company. In other words, regardless of what competes with what, I see AMD as a little closer to selling chips at its ideal ASP than Intel - the difference in ASPs is far smaller than it was in previous years, and Intel cannot accept ASPs less than twice AMD's - but that's what is beginning to happen.

PS - by the way, you may wish that Athlon didn't compete with P4, but P4 has been largely blocked from the market ever since its launch. Sales are running half of forecast or less. If that wasn't due to competition from Athlon, what do you think caused it? And why has Athlon sales volume continued to meet plan, even if not at ideal ASPs? IMHO, P4 is being specifically marketed by Intel as an "Athlon Killer", only it isn't working - if anything the reverse is true. |
