Steven,
I enjoyed your description of your time raising your children. My own daughters have each spent half their their lives being raised by their fathers, who, while not well-suited to me, are both wonderful fathers. There is still a stigma about this arrangement. I have faced, even recently in fact, the derision and revulsion of others who cannot comprehend such an arrangement. When will people understand that it's not who but how one is raised?

It must be great to have plenty of household help. It certainly makes childrearing more bearable. I remember feeling close-to-overwhelmed by the combination of my kids' needs, the household duties, and the social isolation of many young childrearing parents. I've been reading about the Andrea Yates story today (the woman with post partum psychosis who drowned her five children) and thinking about the theme of perfectionism and selflessness that ran through her life. Surely they contributed to her final horrifying acts upon her children.
