Peter,

Continuing from the previous threads ... EarthLink wholesales "dial tone IP" from the two largest "backbone" providers in the business for it customers outside of Southern California. These are UUNET and PSiNet. Together they have over 620 PoP's in North America that cover over 90% of the population. Both UUNET and PSiNet have abdicated the individual dial business to providers like EarthLink because they did not want or could not handle the support issues.

As to the upgrade issue, EarthLink recently issued a press release clearly outlining our 56K modem strategy. We will support both x2 and K56flex in Southern California and will support K56flex on a national basis before the end of this summer. Despite what you read in the press, these technologies are still very early and are not suited for wide spread deployment in many PoP's. USRobotics has currently a slight edge in that they are delivering a product that delivers speeds far in excess of 28.8. Unfortunately, most of EarthLink', UUNET's and PSiNet's modems are from Ascend and by default support the K56flex standard. We are actively testing these modems with the new terminal server software and with our network partners will deploy these as soon as the code is stable and production quantities become available for deployment.

I hope this helps clarify certain issues you raised in your previous posts.
