CSL plans CDMA network in Hong Kong
By Michael Newlands, in Western Australia

25 June 2001

A new CDMA network may be constructed in the Hong Kong Special Economic region, reports the South China Morning Post.

According to the newspaper, mobile operator Hong Kong CSL Ltd., which is jointly owned by Internet maverick Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. (PCCW) and Australian incumbent Telstra Corp., may adopt Qualcomm Inc.'s 2.5G CDMA technology to provide high-speed Internet access on mobile handsets.

The company already has two GSM and one TDMA network. Customers of the TDMA network, 1+1, may be upgraded to the proposed CDMA service, the paper claims.

CSL needs something to counteract larger rival Hutchison Telecom, which will soon introduce an i-Mode mobile Internet service courtesy of its Japanese shareholder and strategic partner NTT DoCoMo Inc., which has 25 million i-Mode subscribers in Japan.
