Mass conversion in T.N. village

By Our Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE, JUNE 29. About 1,000 members belonging to 225 Arundhadhiar families of a village, about 30 km from here, today embraced Christianity in protest against alleged excesses by caste Hindus. Hailing from K.
Ayyampalayam, Pazhavur and some habitations near Palladam the converts had allegedly not been allowed to worship and humiliated by the caste Hindus at a temple function on June 6. As authorities did not act even after several representations, they resorted to conversion, Mr. S.T. Kalyanasundaram, president of the Tamil Nadu Arundhadhiar Democratic Front said. Formal baptising would be done tomorrow. According to observers, this is one of the major instances of mass conversion reported in the State after the Meenakshipuram incident in the 1980s.
