I would imagine that if AMD has similar index-based investment choices for it's employees, then they probably own INTC as well.

You're quite right. The difference is that AMD doesn't consider managing investment portfolios to be one of its core competencies. You'd think Intel's employee retirement funds would be big enough that they could drive a hard bargain with Vanguard and get them to do it. It's another example of the Barrett/Bryant team fiddling while Rome burns.
