McCarthyism was the closest the US has ever gotten to a tumble into fascism. If he had succeeded then Big Brother would certainly have taken over just like in a commnunist country where everyone rats on everyone. Based on a BIG LIE (fear of communism within the US) freedom of speech and expression could have been done away with and a rightwing ruling class could have taken over backed by the military.

You see the brewing evidence of that mentality these days in the Rush Limbaugh "dittohead" world. That is, Us conservative whites who can do no wrong and pretend we're "good" Christians against everyone else who is "bad" and targets of ridicule, the dream of dominating women and minorities and unapologetic about hoarding wealth and power. Very Nazi like if you study the roots of Nazism (which was actually very popular as a form of right-wing conservatism/nationalism in its day) and much more dangerous than the "comedy" of it suggests. Because it can stir up hatred, division and paranoia if unabated. All a Big Lie though. Dittoheads are pussies who are mainly just ignorant or angry, insecure closet-racists. They are insecure people who fear something has been taken away from them. Perhaps they would be happier under McCarthyism or even Nazism.

Thank God the triumph of McCarthyism never happened because this is America (The Land Of The Free) and McCarthy was eventually exposed as the hateful, paranoid anti-American fraud he really was. That was the dark side of the 50's Cold War hysteria and struggle against Civil rights and Womens Rights which brought us the 60's. Gradually things are getting better though some in the Bush camp would like to take us at least a few steps backward.

As for Fidel, I saw Cuban Police shoot a kid in Havana once. I think he was a thief. They can just do that down there. The police can do anything in a police state. Reminds of of a right-wing Police state like Saddam's or the cops killing unarmed kids at Kent State in the 60's for protesting. Communism is equally as bad as Fascism (right-wing police states) as is tyranny in any form. They may have different philosophies to begin with but once they take power they're just tyrants, all the same. Seizing power by force and keeping it that way with more force. Feeding lies to everyone and repressing the press, justice and right of free speech so that no one can argue with them. Tyranny = tyranny in any form and no educated "liberal" in this country condones the tactics of Fidel (if they are aware of them like I am).

I feel very sorry for the Cuban people and the peoples of any nation even Iraq who are the real victims. Sadly, the US embargo against Cuba does absolutely no good. It just means the people can't eat. And Fidel hoards what remaining wealth there is and isolates the entire country. The other tragedy of Cuba is that the right-wing gangster government which preceeded Fidel was a big can of worms too so that's nothing they want to go back to. Only a true democracy would save Cuba now and it is highly unlikely to ever happen unless we were to invade. We could take Cuba in 1 day any time we want and the Cuban people would rejoice but we'd need a good excuse. Fidel is too smart to give us an excuse like that and he is actually a somewhat compassionate man unlike Saddam. But he's mostly just a dictator like all the rest. A man who started out an idealist with a cause and ended up just as bad or worse than the ones he replaced.

Invasions are messy. Lives would be lost. American lives. Tricky question what to do about Cuba. Or Iraq? Containment is the "I give up" solution.

Bush Sr. didn't have the balls to go in and take Saddam out when we had the clear opportunity and no presdient is likely to have the balls to take Fidel out. Reagan might have if Fidel had given him enough of a reason (remember Granada?) but Fidel never did.

Just wish we had a president with a brain, experience and understanding of foreign affairs. I feel sorry for Colin Powell who will have to do all all the heavy lifting himself. Hopefully he will succeed. If so a black man could end up leading the GOP someday and would change the party forever as he disagrees fervently with the right-wing anti social program agenda. Might even lead to the splintering of the GOP and the creation of more of a three or four party system.
