I think it would be difficult to say that anything is the hardest job in the world. What's hard for one person is easy for another. I also don't see any reason why a columnist would have to retire to take care of a 6 year old. A kid that age is probably in first grade, and probably spends a lot of time with friends. I don't see why a columnist couldn't work at home, while the kid is in school.

I suspect that there are other factors involved, and also that the column was largely tongue-in-cheek.

Certainly the right wing has exaggerated the difficulty of being a parent; feminists have done this too. I, for one, have never found it to be especially difficult; I would say that taking care of women is more difficult than taking care of children. This is presumably more a matter of disposition than any abstract level of difficulty.

I would certainly not say that child-rearing is a mind-numbing or suffocating experience. Kids keep you on your toes and provide plenty of material for contemplation - actually plenty of time for contemplation, too: the average parent spends a lot of time stepping back and watching children interact, intervening only as necessary. This is very useful thinking time. I can't say I find dealing with kids to be any less stimulating intellectually than dealing with corporate bureaucrats.
