A followup from my last Sunday post on the article in the "Birmingham News". That article mentioned Rick Dent, a former campaign spokesman for the Alabama governor.

The following is Mr Dent's letter to the editor published today in the "Birmingham News".

In your story about my client, ACTV, your deliberate omissions leave a biased, inaccurate impression. Here are the facts your reporters knew but failed to report:

ACTV is the nation's second largest teacher training software company and is one of the best companies in its field.

It's work in Alabama has won national recognition, and produced spectacular and indisputable results - 99 percent of the teachers say it met their needs and made them more effective.

You fail to mention that the two legislative critics voted for the ACTV program. State Rep. Neal Morrison voted in support each time. State Rep. Alvin Holmes voted against the program in 1999, but voted "yes" a year later. Yet he was allowed to savage the contract in the paper - the story's most blatant and deliberate omission.

Omitting all of these facts is nothing short of deception. I'll leave it to your readers to ponder why.

The placement and tone of your story also left the false impression that your newspaper uncovered a secret. There was nothing new in your story. I voluntarily disclosed my Alabama clients in 1999, even though I was under no legal requirement of do so.

I just thought Mr Dent's letter was interesting.
