I have a friend who got into his bios setup and botched things up. Instead of waiting until someone could try to help with the problem the friend did a format "c". Now the computer will not allow him to reinstall his win98. Can he or can't he still access the bios? He was getting an error message "CPU is unworkable or had been changed". I search for this and in short, set "Speed Error Hold" to "Disabled" was the most frequent response. The rest of my pm to him was:

"I may be wrong but I believe your bios is still there. When you try to boot hit the delete key (that's the most common way) after you hear the beeps of the power on self test (POST). Other keys include F10 on Compaqs when the big cursor is in the upper right of the screen for example. Also Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Ctrl-q, Ctrl-s, Alt-s, Esc, Alt-Esc, Alt-Enter, Ctrl-Alt-Esc, Ctrl-Alt-Enter, Ctrl-Alt-F8, and Ctrl-Alt-Insert. You might have to try several of these before you find the one that works."

This should send you to the bios setup. There will probably be some setting there that says return system to setup defaults or something similar. See if that doesn't enable you to install windows again. I feel pretty sure the inability to recognize the CPU will keep you from being able to do anything with the machine.

Read about the bios here.

I don't figure he can mess it up much further but after posting to him I thought I'd post the problem to the thread for comments and suggestions. I am out of my league here and probably shouldn't have told him anything. He's going to wait until after the holiday to tackle this so any input would be appreciated.

tc :-)
