ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- For some investors, Motley Fool(www.fool.com) has turned into something of a tragedy.

"Who was I kidding, thinking I could do this on my own?" scoffs Bruce Corigliano, a former "Fool" follower, marking a shift in the reverential tone that he and other small investors had when they gushed about the popular Web site during the bull market.

The 50-year-old Los Angeles doctor says that last year he lost 30% of his children's college fund by following a stock-buying strategy devised by David and Tom Gardner, brothers who sparked the do-it-yourself investment movement in 1994 with an electronic forum named after a Shakespearean character. Wearing jester hats and trumpeting the profits on their model portfolios, the then-twentysomething English majors demonstrated that stock picking was fun and easy.
