U.S. poll indicates Microsoft support

PATRICK BRETHOUR

Monday, July 2, 2001

Most Americans believe Microsoft Corp. has learned its lesson and should not be broken up, a snap poll released yesterday indicates.

Nearly half of respondents want the U.S. government to simply drop the case. The Ipsos-Reid survey shows widespread sympathy for Microsoft -- with heavy Internet users most kindly disposed toward the firm -- and comes as both the software giant and the U.S. government signal their willingness to begin settlement talks, in the wake of Thursday's appeals ruling.

"People have no patience with the government's effort to break up Microsoft," said Thomas Riehle, Ipsos-Reid's U.S. public affairs president. He said the poll puts the government in a "tough situation" with public opinion, but gives the Bush administration an opening to end the case.
