Medicine as a market for FO: The author of this article doesn't touch on the real reason why there is slow adoption of IT in medical centers, hospitals, and doctors' offices. The real reason is cost. Reimbursement is fixed by a combination of federal and local mechanisms that keeps margins low. Those margins can possibly get even thinner if Medicare reduces reimbursement to maintain global budget targets. I would be interested in any surveys of LAN/WAN side technology at hospitals and clinics. The last time I reviewed it the majority were standard ethernet with some FDDI and ATM for more bandwidth intensive applications like digital radiology. Those applications were mostly at academic centers with researchers interested in their development. George D.
