There was a big lawsuit mid 90's. People found out that the "drip edge" was not sealed enough. Water was absorbed and the composite wood swelled, separated and grew mushrooms. Not all the siding failed. If it was adequately caulked, painted and the drip edge back brushed and sealed, it performed to its specifications.

Unfortunately, it was a "sell the rumour, sell the news".
People were unsure, "when not if", the siding would fail,so rather than inspect and coat with an elastomeric paint, they just bought a house that didn't have it. Or demanded excessive concession in the pricing.
