Flat open, steady rise till 2181 on COMPX. Sell off during 8:30 AM EST time frame, steady selling till 2 PM counter rally. Counter rally was weak. COMPX day near support at 2140.

SOX and COMPX both on modest sell signals. SOX still could break either way as it appears trapped in a range intra-day, but bias is slightly down down for now.

It looks like trading on Friday stood as is. A lot of shorts got burned by their stop losses.

*********************

The first day of the new month, new quarter and the second half of the year ended with mixed results. The Dow got off to a poor start as 3M (MMM +3.15) fell after issuing a warning for Q2. The earnings miss was not significant (expects range of $1.10-$1.10 vs consensus of $1.19) but the company did state that they have seen continued weakness in the U.S. and an increasing slowdown in Europe and Asia-Pacific. The semiconductor sector weighed on the Nasdaq early after an industry reported indicated that in the latest period there has been a continued drop in sales which reflects the current inventory overhang that has plagued the industry since November. Despite these negatives, the backlog/adjustments that followed the Nasdaq computer problems from last Friday and the end of merger talks (HON/GE and UAL/U), the market staged a solid recovery rally with the Dow firmly grasping the leadership reins (3M led the way higher). Stronger than expected consumption and construction spending data along with an above consensus NAPM report provided the boost with the focus shifting to economically sensitive/cyclicals and thus the blue chip out performance. The fact that the Nasdaq Composite had risen the previous five sessions while the Dow underperformed also helps explain today's disparity. The dearth of news and research in front of the holiday helped keep the market confined for the vast majority of the day. Treasuries rallied smartly as oil continued to weaken along with the prices paid component of the NAPM which leaves it below the 50% level for the fourth month in a row. Tomorrow's trade is expected to be exceptionally thin as many investors will take off the holiday shortened session.
