SURVEY - CREATIVE BUSINESS: Answering mobile operators prayers Financial Times; Jun 19, 2001 By ALAN CANE
To Europe's cash-strapped mobile phone operators, eVector must seem like the US cavalry, arriving in the nick of time to save their bacon.
With headquarters in the UK, but its research base in Bangalore, India, the company is within weeks of launching software which, it claims, will allow mobile operators to transmit third-generation content - full-motion video, internet information and the like - over 2G networks, like the much-touted General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).
The savings on infrastructure would be considerable, which is why the technology, called eVector Utopia, is generating a lot of interest. The company's backers include Intel, the world's largest chip manufacturer, and Reuters.
The product, an advanced form of data compression, is a combination of technology from eVector and Bullant, an Australian group. It is similar to the way video can be compressed for transmission, in that only changes to the screen image, rather than an entire screenful of picture elements, are transmitted.
