Lucent CDMA deal confirms Nextwave's re-emergence
By Total Telecom staff

03 July 2001

U.S. mobile operator Nextwave and vendor Lucent Technologies announced
Monday a deal to build a new CDMA network in the United States.

Initially voice and data networks will be built in Detroit and Madison with a data-only
network to be built in 93 other markets over the next 10 months, according to
Reuters. Nextwave, MCI and Lucent have been trialing a CDMA system, under
temporary license from the FCC, at MCI's headquarters in Washington DC.

"We are striving to be the first to market with this innovative broadband wireless
service," said Allen Salmasi, chief executive.

The U.S. wireless operator, based in Hawthorne, New York, was last week given a
new lease of life when a U.S. appeals court ruled that the FCC had acted wrongly
by repossessing and then auctioning off spectrum Nextwave had originally won in
1995. The company was protected under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Given such a high-profile bankruptcy, Frank Cassou, Nextwave general counsel
and executive vice president, was at pains to emphasis Nextwave's financial
credentials. "We have ample funds on hand to finance this initial construction
effort," he told Reuters. "We expect to file a plan of reorganization shortly and we
anticipate emerging from bankruptcy soon thereafter."
