0:07 ET QUALCOMM (QCOM) 63.50 +5.63 (+9.7%): -- Update -- Merrill Lynch raises near-term rating to ACCUMULATE from Neutral based on this morning's announcement that Nokia and QCOM had expanded their CDMA cross-license. Firm had argued that Nokia was in no rush to sign this agreement until it would be necessary to support wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) deployment. Merrill now believes that this agreement suggests that Nokia sees wideband CDMA as imminent. as imminent.

Merrill - I think - is close.....

Near useless UMTS cell sites are, I believe, imminent.

NOK must get UMTS base stations in the field - equipment that they're paying carriers to install with excessive 100%++ financing - prior to the failure of GPRS to live up to even diminished expectations... or even remedial functionality...

As 3GSM evolutionary credibility is called seriously into question, UMTS equipment installed in the field may be perceived by NOK as necessary to motivate even stalwart 3GSM carriers to stay on plan.....

And NOK has only until the beginning of Q4 before the GPRS fecal matter hits the fan.....

So they're pressured into an agreement with Q to get the POS UMTS infrastructure out the door NOW.

I think this is why we have this deal now.
