"What surprises me is how much calmer I feel now even though I am much less wealthier. Has anyone else experienced this or am I just fooling myself? "

My take: you could be fooling yourself. Ask yourself this question: is it really calm you feel, or is it paralysis or the "freedom" that comes from resignation?

Continual bombardments of stress-inducing stimuli often cause one to shut down, and apparent calm to reign... BWTFDIK? I find myself fighting paralysis quite often these days... and must rouse myself soon to deal with my LEAPS-that-have-become-calls (sigh).

Perhaps Dr. Id would have a better answer.
