If McKinley has a much better SpecInt than Merced, equal or slightly inferior specFPU, would you call it taking a step backward ?

you are working on the same process generation (Mckinley and merced on .18). What gives then ? OK, maybe a little less x86 compatibility in McKinley. But if you want a much larger cache and a much better specInt, you have to give up other aspects (even accounting for a better McKinley microarchitecture).
