Maui, McKinley is a very different design from Merced. As the years went by, Intel and HP realized that what they'd architected in the mid 90s wasn't going to be good enough for the 2000s. Other microprocessor designs had improved so much as to put it to shame. So, they started over. Well, I'm sure there are recognizable pieces in Mac from Merced.

Sounds like you're thinking they had to rob from Peter to pay Paul. I think they probably used some PaRISC, some Merced, some who knows what else. Gotta get to Mac.
