You are right about the software needs having matured. Windows XP is not going to get snapped up as soon as it hits the shelves. I can't find anyone who is waiting on features in XP that they don't have now. What is even more incredible is the number of analysts thinking that a consumer O/S is going to spur a corporate hardware upgrade cycle. No chance! Corporations are not going to abandon the security and flexibility offered by NT and Win2000 for a bug ridden O/S filled with features they don't want their employees using anyways. XP might even be a marketing flop for Microsoft.
