Ref < Maui, McKinley is a very different design from Merced. As the years went by, Intel and HP realized that what they'd architected in the mid 90s wasn't going to be good enough for the 2000s. Other microprocessor designs had improved so much as to put it to shame. So, they started over. Well, I'm sure there are recognizable pieces in Mac from Merced. >

I believe that McKinley is basically a Merced with the same number of execution units as Merced ( The first Itanium). What has been added is a much larger on chip cache , and longer pipelines. ( These are the same architectural techniques which improved the performance from the Pentium to Pentium II, III and IV).

Regarding having to steal from Peter to pay Paul, you dont have to, if you add more transistors. Obviously that costs more in chip cost, but process shrinks take care of that problem. McKinley is obviously on 0.18micron at present, but the Merced may have been done on 0.25micron, but I am not sure.
