OT: Gene, those are actually the rear suspension shocks.

Many modern race cars use a "pushrod" type suspension that uses a series of pivots to move the shocks into a horizontal position. This allows them to use a more aerodynamic body shape and also moves the shocks to a position where adjustments are easier. Instead of the shocks being attached near the wheel hub, a rod is attached there, which acts upon pivot points to transfer the wheel hub movement to the shock absorbers. Notice the small damper above the shocks, which probably is there to allow fine tuning, and also the gold exterior oil reservoir. This outboard reservoir dramatically increases the oil capacity of the shock, keeping it cooler and reducing the risk of foaming the oil.
