You didn't mention nuke plant as an alternative. Say nuclear around an environmentalist and you'll hear TMI and Chernoble spit out automatically. Federal regulations that kicked in during the 70's make them very costly to build now. The Clinton plant that was designed before the new regulations to cost $200 million wound up costing $4 billion in the end. Breeder reactors are safer and cheaper but are prohibited by federal law, thank you Jimmy Carter.

You also have the environmentalists howling about what to do with the waste although Russia is talking about using an area of Siberia as a world dump.
