In the past, there has been a security breach whereby the alias was replaced with your login identification. Imagine what could be done with that.

Actually, unless things have changed rather recently, that became a moot issue for new users quite a while ago. No alias is selected at registration. Instead, the LoginID is used as the alias, giving away 50% of what it takes to get into an account. Think I protested? Think it did any good? hehe One of the more criticism-worthy things I've seen in many years of programming and I really hope it got fixed. It does, however, bespeak a too-casual or too-uninformed approach to security.

I think that was done largely to make programmer confusion over the distinction between LoginID and Alias a non-issue.
