That is so neat that you are discussing the OTHER. I got The Tortilla Curtain on tape from the library. Never before have I had the time for books on tape- but now I have an hour commute each way- sometimes more, and I find I don't even CARE now that I have books to listen to. I read the Tortilla Curtain in a book group- but being read to! What a joy. I feel such a connection to the children I teach, Listening to good reading is a totally different experience than reading for oneself- I think we as adults tend to forget that- or at least I had. As an adult I've used mostly visual sources for information- I've discriminated against my auditory system. I even prefer foreign movies with subtitles since those require me to listen less attentively (thus freeing me to keep track of my kids with my auditory sense). So this is like an awakening of my senses. I missed my off ramp on the way home I was so engrossed in the book- and I'm getting so much out of it!!!

If you haven't read the Tortilla Curtain I really recommend it. Marvelous book.
