John,

When I was an analyst, at my firm, an analyst could not act on his or her new recommendation for five trading days.

Moreover, it was absolutely forbidden for an analyst to trade contrary to his/her recommendation. The director of research monitored all analysts' accounts, and would break prohibited trades. This applied to spouses' and children's accounts as well.

This meant that if I, for example, reduced the rating on Intel from a "1"- strong buy- to "2"-buy- I could still not sell it for my own account, as- technically- I was still recommending it.

Best,

2MacLean
