I'm not familiar with The Tortilla Curtain but I just finished House of Sand and Fog which sounds as if it deals with similar issues--( I looked at a review of T.C.) American Dream, cultural differences, immigration. ONly in House, the person who is down and out is the white American, not the Iranian. I didn't enjoy it as I read it, but now am haunted by it. I kept wanting to slap the characters and make them sit down and LISTEN to each other.

Being read to is luxurious. I especially love British novels.
