Colty, that's simple, what was the rate of population growth in the time of guns vs the time of medicine. Consider how much better doctors got after they understood that they could face a firing squad. Advances in medicine followed advances in manufacturing technology and making guns in New England lead the way to advances in mass production and metallurgy and machining.
