That was a thoughtful article.

It seems that there are two issues: Firstly, there is an abstract concept that standards of "punishment" should be equal. However, they are not--they are unequal; and the visceral desire of people everywhere is that they remain unequal. Secondly, what should the standard of "punishment" be; and how does this relate to the "goal" of punishment, or justice?

What is it we, as society, wish to accomplish? And what human attributes motivate us to adjust the stretch of the rack?
