Because there is no historical precedent for it in the U.S. and or banking and financial systems are very different from Japan's. 3 years is the max I see this or any other bear market lasting in the U.S. and we are already 15 months into the tech bear market. Common sense tells me that it will last (at worst) until October or November 2002.
Even before inventories are worked down, this country will not stop innovating. Eventually, after the weakest companies have gone under, the stronger companies which are left standing will begin to fear being left behind to their equally strong competitors if they neglect IT and appropriate innovation and upgrades for too long. This is the beauty of the capitalist system.
