Intel to make 'significant' roadmap changes next week

KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp. (INTC) will make a "highly significant announcement" that will boost the status of its Malaysian plants when its Chief Executive Officer Craig R. Barrett visits next month, the Star newspaper reported Thursday.

Wong Siew Hai, Intel's vicepresident and general manager of worldwide assembly test manufacturing, said Barrett's announcement is expected to reaffirm the company's commitment to Malaysia.

Intel has invested $1.87 billion in Malaysia since 1972, the report said. The company employs 8,000 people at its two plants in northern Malaysia.

Wong said "production has come down slightly" from a year ago at the plants.

He said production has been flat in recent months but was no longer declining.
