You might consider MIPS, picoTurbo, and to some extent INTC as American competitors to ARM. However, ARM has very strong patents on their low power RISC cores. MIPS has targeted a different market segment, computers and large embedded systems. picoTurbo has some similar designs to ARM. Reason for lawsuits. They are a very small player and I have not publicly seen many design wins for them. The lawsuits are hanging on them so they are going to have a tough time getting design wins. INTC has the StrongARM (which uses ARM IP) but a lot of folks have avoid them because it is INTC. QC moved from INTC processors to ARM about 3-4 years ago. INTC can be really hard to work with (like MR Softy).

Their dominance extends way beyond Europe. In fact, their dependency on Europe, although large, has decreased tremendously in the last 2 years. The Dragonball processor (Moto part) that is being used in the Palm is going to be using the ARM9 in the future. Big design win. Also, you will see in the near future many companies (Handsets, PDAs) moving to the ARM9. They will win big with this core. Trust me.
