The issue of Andrea Yates' husband is troublesome to me as well. We do know that PPD gets worse with each successive pregnancy and I feel he was morally (though not legally) responsible for the safety of his children and wife when it became apparent she was psychotic. I'd like to know more about this type of PPD: what the incidence of violent behavior is, toward either the self (on the part of the mother) or the children. I'll try to dig up more in the coming days and post it here.

I have had experience with women who were hospitalized for depression and saw that, pretty much to a person, their relationships with their husbands were really out of whack at the time. A number of patients' husbands were furious with them. Some were served with divorce papers while hospitalized. Others' husbands had assumed the role of caregiver to both wife and children. Whether this happened before the depression, concurrent with it, or as a result, was impossible to figure. But surely the emotional balance in a marriage when one partner is severly compromised gets way off kilter.
